The Krugerrand is the world’s first modern gold bullion coin. South Africa began striking it in 1967 to sell its gold in small, easily traded pieces. By 1980 it made up most of the world’s gold coin trade, and it is still one of the most bought gold coins today.
The obverse carries a portrait of Paul Kruger, the 19th-century president of the Transvaal Republic; the reverse a springbok antelope in full leap, designed by Coert Steynberg. No face value is printed on the coin: it is legal tender in South Africa, valued by its gold content.
The Krugerrand is 22 carat: 916.7 fine, with copper added to the gold, which gives it a warm, slightly reddish tone. That does not mean less gold — the 1 oz coin weighs 33.93 grams and contains exactly 31.1035 grams of pure gold. The copper alloy makes the coin harder, so it scratches far less than a pure-gold coin.
Weights and premium
We stock the 1 oz coin — the Krugerrand’s most common and most liquid size. Its premium per gram is lower than on fractional coins, and gold dealers all over the world know it on sight.
We sell mixed years: the year depends on stock and cannot be chosen. Condition is bullion quality; older years may show light handling marks, which do not affect the gold content. Buying: the price is fixed the moment you order, against the live world market, and you then collect in Tallinn or we send it by insured courier.
