The Australian Kangaroo is The Perth Mint’s bullion gold coin. The mint first struck it in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, showing famous Australian gold nuggets. Since 1990 the reverse has carried a kangaroo and the coin has been called the Kangaroo — wholesalers still use both names.
The kangaroo design changes every year, so the years are easy to tell apart. The obverse carries the British monarch’s profile — King Charles III on recent coins, Queen Elizabeth II on older ones. The coin is legal tender in Australia; the 1 oz carries a face value of 100 Australian dollars.
Fineness is 999.9, 24 carat — this is pure gold. Pure gold is soft, so leave the coin in its capsule: a scratch takes nothing off the gold content, but it spoils the look.
Weights and premium
We stock the 1 oz coin — the most common bullion size. Its premium per gram is lower than on fractional coins, and gold dealers all over the world know the Kangaroo.
We sell mixed years: the year depends on stock and cannot be chosen. Condition is bullion quality; older years may show light handling marks, which do not affect the gold content. Buying: the price is fixed the moment you order, against the live world market, and you then collect in Tallinn or we send it by insured courier.
