Gold slipped below the psychologically important $4,000 mark for the first time since November and is heading for yet another weekly loss. The cause lies less in gold itself than in a strengthening dollar and the market’s repriced expectations for the path of US interest rates. Below are the week’s key stories — each with a link to its source.

The week’s key stories

Gold dropped below $4,000. On 24 June spot gold traded at $3,978.80 an ounce (−3.19%) and silver at $58.15 (−5.39%) — the first sustained move below $4,000 since November. The dollar index held near a 52-week high. Gold is now trading more as a rate and currency asset than as a geopolitical safe haven, as easing oil prices trimmed the risk premium. Kitco, 24 June 2026

A fourth consecutive weekly drop. By week’s end gold had recovered to $4,051.97 and silver to $58.33, but gold was on track for a roughly 2.5% weekly loss — its longest losing streak since August 2023. Saxo Bank analyst Ole Hansen noted that investor sentiment remains shaken by the recent sell-off. Bybit’s Han Tan warned that a sustained break below $4,000 could see support tested at $3,886, and in the months ahead even the $3,600–$3,700 range. Kitco, 26 June 2026

Repriced Fed expectations weigh on price. After its June meeting the US Federal Reserve raised its median year-end 2026 policy-rate projection to 3.8% (from 3.4% in March), shifting market expectations from rate cuts toward possible hikes. According to CME FedWatch, the market put the odds of a September hike at roughly 61%. Higher real rates make holding non-yielding gold costlier and strengthen the dollar. Kitco, 24 June 2026

Money is flowing out of gold ETFs. According to the World Gold Council (WGC), physically backed gold ETFs recorded net outflows of 16 tonnes in May, and the outflows continued in early June. Standard Chartered estimated that at current prices more than 200 tonnes of ETF-held gold is in loss-making territory. Analysts tie ETF flows closely to US monetary policy — with higher rate expectations, demand for non-yielding assets weakens. Kitco, 25 June 2026

Analyst: gold is losing safe-haven status to bonds. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Mike McGlone argues that US Treasuries are becoming more competitive against gold: bond yields rose to about 5.20% in May — the highest since 2007. He notes gold reached its highest valuation relative to Treasuries in nearly 40 years in the first quarter and could stay vulnerable in 2026 if rising real yields dominate. Silver, in his view, is around 18% undervalued. Kitco, 25 June 2026

What this price means for an Estonian investor

In dollar terms the drop was sharp, but for a euro-based investor the stronger dollar cushions part of it: when the USD appreciates against the euro, the gold price measured in euros falls by a smaller step than in dollars. Right now a one-ounce gold coin costs roughly €3,700–3,800 with us — for example a 1 oz Austrian Philharmonic gold coin or a 1 oz Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin. Silver has fallen below its early-year peaks in dollars and carries a lower entry threshold: a one-ounce American Eagle silver coin or a British Britannia gold coin are popular choices for both first-time buyers and those diversifying a portfolio.

Short-term price moves are part of the precious-metals market and currently depend largely on the dollar and rate expectations. When making a purchase decision, it is worth looking at the longer picture and your own situation rather than at a single week.

This article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice or a solicitation to buy or sell precious metals.
